The Ministry of Health says 964 more persons were tested positive for the novel coronavirus today (July 09). This brings the total number of COVID-19 cases confirmed in the country thus far 270,910. According to official data, 26,484 virus-infected people are currently being treated at designated hospitals and treatment centres across the island. The recoveries count climbed to 241,035 today with 1,451 more patients who were under medical care for novel coronavirus returning to health. Meanwhile, the death toll from the pandemic outbreak in Sri Lanka reached 3,434 as the Director-General of Health Services confirmed 43 new fatalities today.

The number of vaccines that are being received in July will be made available to the public, giving priority to the districts identified as high-risk areas for Covid-19 spread. A total of 100,000 vaccines each have been allocated for Galle, Matara, Hambantota, Anuradhapura, Nuwara Eliya, Ratnapura, Badulla, and Matale Districts and two hundred thousand vaccines have been allocated for the Kurunegala District. Out of this, 600,000 doses will be allocated to the Colombo District for the people who have received the first dose. It was decided to administer the future vaccine doses to arrive in the country in a scientific manner, taking into account the spread of COVID-19 in the country. President Rajapaksa also instructed that steps be taken to provide more space for the resumption of economic activities as a significant percentage of vaccine doses have already been given to the people.

A fire engulfed a food and beverage factory outside Bangladesh’s capital, killing at least 52 people, many of whom were trapped inside by an illegally locked door, fire officials said Friday. He said the main exit of the factory was locked from the inside and many of those who died were trapped. Bangladesh has a tragic history of industrial disasters, including factories catching fire with the workers locked inside. According to Bangladesh’s factory laws, a factory cannot lock its exit when workers are inside during production hours. The country’s worst Industrial disaster came the following year, when the Rana Plaza garment factory outside Dhaka collapsed, killing more than 1,100 people.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) says that the Data Analyst of the Sri Lanka National Team has tested positive for Covid-19. It said that Mr. G. T. Niroshan was found to be positive, following a PCR Test carried out among the National Players, Coaches, and Support Staff yesterday (9), following the identification of Grant Flower as Covid-19 Positive. Niroshan is now undergoing due medical protocols, the SLC said.
