The Parliamentary Council has approved the appointment of Acting Solicitor General Sanjay Rajaratnam as the new Attorney General of Sri Lanka. This brings the total number of COVID-19 cases confirmed in the country thus far to 154,123. Presently 29,540 infected patients are being treated at hospitals and treatment centers across the island. Meanwhile, the number of total recoveries has reached 123,532.

EU member states agreed Wednesday to reopen the bloc’s borders to travellers who have been fully vaccinated against the coronavirus, European sources said. The recommendations will be adopted by EU ministers on Friday, they said. An EU Commission spokesman confirmed that the envoys had endorsed the update to travel rules. This would still exclude non-vaccinated travellers from much of the world, but could allow travel from, for example, Britain, which is well-advanced in its vaccination campaign. The current green list only has seven countries: Australia, Israel, New Zealand, Rwanda, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, plus China if Beijing agrees to reciprocate.

May 20, 2021 05:51 pmThe Ministry of Health reports that 1,165 more patients who were being treated for COVID-19 have recovered and have been discharged from hospital within the last 24 hours. This increases the total number of coronavirus recoveries in the country to 123,532. Sri Lanka has so far reported 151,343 positive cases of COVID-19 while presently a total of 26,760 infected patients are being treated at hospitals and treatment centers. The death toll due to the virus has risen to 1,061.

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Eran Wickramaratne today (20) stated that the Port City Economic Commission Bill is harmful to the country because it would compromise the hard-earned freedom of Sri Lanka. “The extent of this fake patriotism is that the Constitution of Sri Lanka has been violated 26 times due to the Colombo Port City Economic Commission Bill. He stated that the members of his party are not against the Port City but that they are against the Colombo Port City Economic Commission Bill. The Ministry points out that due to the prevailing Covid-19 risk, only a limited number of people can be kept in the hospital premises for compliance with health instructions. Due to the government eye clinics being conducted in every district, it is not necessary to visit the National Eye Hospital for treatment, the Ministry said. Due to this the Ministry of Health informs to come to the Eye Hospital by booking a date and time only for the most essential services. Earlier too, the National Eye Hospital had introduced several special telephone numbers for patients visiting clinics.
