Campaigners are 'astonished' by a loophole in the government's Online Safety Bill that could put pornography websites 'outside its scope'. Porn sites have a combination of user-generated content (uploaded by people who visit the sites themselves) and content created by official partners. The UK government published the draft Online Safety Bill on May 12. Government said at the time age checks would be delivered through its 'proposed online harms regulatory regime' – in other words, the Online Safety Bill. While age verification checks were absent from last week's draft Online Safety Bill, experts think it has simply been put aside for now.

The Epidemiology Unit of the Health Ministry reported that 744 more persons have tested positive for COVID-19 in Sri Lanka on Sunday (May 18), as the daily count of new cases moved to 2,478. This brings the total number of confirmed cases of coronavirus reported in the country to 147,680.

Accordingly, 06 men and 03 women have been arrested and will be detained for 3 days under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA). As many as 1,516 more patients who were being treated for COVID-19 have been discharged from medical care within the last 24 hours, the Ministry of Health reported today (May 18). This brings the total number of coronavirus recoveries in the country to 121,145. Majority of the recoveries were reported from Punanai Treatment Centre (116), Kandakadu Treatment Centre (92) and Bingiriya Treatment Centre (85). Sri Lanka has reported 145,202 positive cases of COVID-19 following the outbreak of the virus infection. However, up to 23,076 virus-infected patients are currently receiving treatment at designated hospitals and treatment centres.

More than 90 people are missing after a barge off the coast of India’s Mumbai city sank amid a severe cyclone. Three other commercial barges carrying about 700 people are stranded at sea in the wake of cyclone Tauktae, which has battered India’s western coast. The third barge, about 92km from the Gujarat coast, is attached to an oil rig. Initially classified as “extremely severe”, the cyclone made landfall in Gujarat state late on Monday with wind speeds of up to 160km/h (100mph). Tauktae is the strongest cyclone to strike the coast of Gujarat since 1998.

Four government websites have come under a cyberattack this morning (May 18), says Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (SLCERT). Accordingly, the official websites of the Ministry of Health, Rajarata University, Ministry of Energy and the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka had been compromised in the said cyberattackThree of these websites have now been restored, the SLCERT said further. Speaking on the matter, SLCERT said an increase in the number of website defacements were observed around this time of the year in the past. Seven government websites fell victim to cyberattacks on May 18 last year. Cyber Security Engineer at SLCERT, Ravindu Meegasmulla said necessary measures have been taken to prevent such cyberattacks.
