And it would bring the world back to the late-19th century’s “spheres of influence” where the great powers, now with the U.S. in a leading role, divide the world up for conquest and extraction. This is what the end of the international order, built since the end of World War II, looks like. JIM WATSON via Getty ImagesThis is not what the Monroe Doctrine, which Trump bases his new vision on, was intended for. But the U.S., once upon a time and often with blatant hypocrisy, had at least promoted an international order that aspired to restrain the brutality that visited the world in the first half of the 20th century — no more. Trump and Miller would rather return to their vision of the state of nature that existed before the world learned a bloody lesson.
The House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday released a report after its own investigation into FireAid, the charity founded by Clippers executives that raised $100 million for wildfire relief efforts in Los Angeles last January. The new Republican-led committee report is skeptical of the nonprofit work done under FireAid’s auspices — but cites relatively few examples of groups deviating from FireAid’s stated goals. Out of hundreds of nonprofits given millions in FireAid funds, “In total, the Committee found six organizations that allocated FireAid grants towards labor, salaries, or other related costs,” the report said. AdvertisementThe committee singled out several local nonprofits, focused on relief and development for minorities and marginalized groups, for criticism. of Los Angeles County and LA Conservation Corps “towards labor, salaries, or other related costs,” which the committee said went against FireAid’s stated goals.

In college in Washington, D.C., I always told people I grew up outside of Los Angeles. Los Angeles Times reporter Colleen Shalby’s family home survived the Eaton fire in Altadena. Others were engineers at the Jet Propulsion Lab and professors at Caltech and teachers and artists and plumbers and everyday commuters to downtown Los Angeles. The Eaton fire took off less than two miles east from my family’s home, not far from the base of Eaton Canyon. (Eric Thayer / Los Angeles Times)AdvertisementMonths after the fire, my family was able to move back to Altadena.
A U.S. military seizure of Greenland from a longtime ally, Denmark, would send shock waves through the NATO alliance and deepen the divide between Trump and European leaders. “We want to take action, but we want to do so together with our European partners,” he said on France Inter radio. A German government source said separately that Germany was “closely working together with other European countries and Denmark on the next steps regarding Greenland”. Trump has repeatedly said Russian and Chinese vessels are stalking waters around Greenland, which Denmark disputes. Vessel tracking data from MarineTraffic and LSEG show no presence of Chinese or Russian ships near Greenland.

The Trump administration may have notified oil companies that it was preparing to nab Venezuela’s leader, at least according to statements made Sunday by President Donald Trump. There is precedent for keeping information about military action from lawmakers — such as when President Barack Obama ordered the raid that killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan. The War Powers Resolution of 1973 was passed in response to the Vietnam War by a united Congress over Richard Nixon’s veto as a way to force presidents to consult lawmakers before and after military action. During the first Trump administration, the Utah Republican supported a bipartisan resolution to bar the president from offensive military action in Iran without congressional approval. A resolution under the War Powers Act to demand congressional approval for military action in Venezuela was filed by Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine and Republican Sen. Rand Paul last month.
