Images show abandoned belongings and mock police stations at former scam centerBy SAKCHAI LALITKANCHANAKUL Associated Press and JINTAMAS SAKSORNCHAI Associated PressO'SMACH, Cambodia -- In the town of O’Smach, along Cambodia’s northern border with Thailand, stands a compound of abandoned buildings that were battered by shelling during recent weeks of armed clashes. The site, now occupied by Thai troops, had served as one of Cambodia’s notorious scam centers, according to Thai officials. A six-story building, shown to journalists and international observers on Monday during a trip organized by the Thai military, is scattered with documents, equipment and personal belongings, likely abandoned in haste. The Thai military said the compound was secured during the December clashes because Cambodian forces had used it as a military base. The set-ups served as essential to a scam where people are targeted by scam operators pretending to be officials or other authority figures.

George E. Bogden’s justifications for President Donald Trump’s tariffs in his Jan. 29 online op-ed, “Forget TACO. It’s GUAC that matters with Trump’s tariffs,” were far from being the nutritious feast that he supposes. Flint also noted that environmentalists often find themselves at odds with humanity’s desire to improve living standards. Cooper focused on RAP’s interest subsidies without noting that the Save plan included the same subsidies. Cooper also made no mention of how much higher payments under the RAP plan will be.

I read the online version daily, and closely follow its reporting about the Supreme Court. Traditionally, the Times had a single Supreme Court reporter: Anthony Lewis, Stuart Taylor, Linda Greenhouse, and most recently Adam Liptak. These reporters would cover all facets of the Supreme Court. The Times Insider interviews the SCOTUS quartet--Jodi Kantor, Adam Liptak, Ann Marimow, and Abbie VanSickle--to explain why the Times has expanded its coverage. Speaking of balance, I'd like to know how Justice Jackson reacted to all of the anti-ICE statements during the Grammy's.

Trevor Noah, host of the 68th Grammy Awards, found fodder in President Trump’s pursuit of Greenland and his alleged connections to Jeffrey Epstein. According to President Trump, the 68th Grammy Awards on Sunday were “virtually unwatchable.” Still, he watched enough to take issue with comedian Trevor Noah’s latest turn as the ceremony’s host. “Which makes sense, I mean, because Epstein’s island is gone, he needs a new one to hang out on with Bill Clinton,” Noah added. “Noah said, INCORRECTLY about me, that Donald Trump and Bill Clinton spent time on Epstein Island. In his post, Trump also referenced previous multimillion-dollar defamation settlements involving ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos and CBS News.

Chief Judge Jeffrey S. Sutton of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit dismissed a Justice Department judicial misconduct complaint against U.S. District Judge James E. Boasberg in an order dated Dec. 19 that only recently came to light. The misconduct charge was first filed with Judge Sri Srinivasan of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Roberts sent it to the Sixth Circuit judicial council, where Sutton reviewed it and ordered dismissal. Procedurally, the judge said the Justice Department failed to supply a listed attachment that the complaint referenced as proof or context for the alleged remarks at the closed-door meeting. In his order Sutton criticized the evidentiary record, writing, “A recycling of unadorned allegations with no reference to a source does not corroborate them.

House Democrats said they wouldn’t help Johnson pass the bill quickly, increasing pressure on House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) Trump has urged House Republicans to approve the legislation quickly and without changes, making Johnson’s job easier. But experts don’t agree on how it’s shaped, or whether the current top federal income tax rate of 37 percent is near its apex. That’s true for the federal income tax on its own, and it’s even more true when factoring in state and local taxes. A top tax rate of 54 percent takes 1 percent off long-run GDP, and 67 percent takes off 2 percent. Additionally, the U.S. has greatly expanded refundable tax credits for poorer people, such that the federal income tax burden for roughly the bottom half of earners is negligible. Other rich countries have much less progressive tax systems, not because they tax the rich less, but because they tax the middle class more.
