China has switched on 2,000 servers under the sea that nobody is allowed to touch

China has put a 24MW underwater data centre into commercial operation off Shanghai, sinking roughly 2,000 servers into pressure-resistant modules cooled by seawater and powered directly by an offshore wind farm. The Rs 2,000 crore Lingang facility claims a PUE under 1.15 and zero freshwater use. It builds on Microsoft's Project Natick, which sank 855 servers off Orkney in 2018, recorded one-eighth the failure rate of land servers, and was later abandoned.
