Plugging gap: Why 67,000 EV charging points aren't enough for India’s electric dreams

67,000 plugs down, 13 lakhs to goAs of August 2026, India had 67,657 public charging points across the country including 1,139 battery-swapping station interfaces. This is in comparison to only 5,000 public chargers in early 2022 and 29,151 in December 2025. They can support charging from 2 kW to 22 kW using a standard Type-2 socket with detachable smart cables. The Rubix analysis says the top 10 states, led by Karnataka, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, account for 78 per cent of all public chargers in India. That means nearly four out of every five public chargers are concentrated in just 10 states. As India's electric vehicle market moves towards larger commercial vehicles, the charging network will therefore need to become not only bigger, but much more powerful.India’s transition to electric vehicles has moved beyond its early stage.
