A woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash in Ottawa's west end Wednesday evening, paramedics said. Ottawa paramedics said they were called to Carling Avenue near Moodie Drive around 7:15 p.m. Wednesday. The woman was critically injured and died at the scene, according to paramedics. Both were alone in their vehicles, paramedics said. Carling was closed in the area until around 6 a.m. Thursday, police said.

Canada's population dropped last year, marking the first time the country has seen an annual net decline in residents since Confederation. This preliminary estimate said a reduction in the number of non-permanent residents was the leading factor in slowing population growth. A spokesperson for the agency told CBC News that it has tracked Canada's population growth since 1867. In a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney, the Northwestern Ontario Municipalities Association (NOMA) is urging the government to designate the stretch of the Trans-Canada Highway — both Highway 11 and Highway 17 — as dual-use national infrastructure. He said NOMA is calling for Highway 11 from Nipigon to North Bay and Highway 17 from Nipigon to Sault Ste. '3 times more likely to die'NOMA represents 37 municipalities across northwestern Ontario, many of which have seen the toll that road fatalities have taken on their communities. According to the Ontario Provincial Police, 10,661 collisions were reported on Highway 11 and 8,960 incidents on Highway 17 between 2020 and 2025. In that period, 116 people died on Highway 11 and 123 on Highway 17, according to the OPP.

New Brunswick's plan to put a new toll near the Nova Scotia border is not going over well with students, truckers and others who cross between provinces every day. "This will primarily affect the people that are over in New Brunswick all the time, supporting the New Brunswick economy." The toll's price has not been set yet but Finance Minister René Legacy estimates it could cost drivers around four dollars, like the Cobequid Pass toll in Nova Scotia. But people living just across the Nova Scotia border are not happy.
