CN Rail crews were clearing tracks early Sunday morning after nine train cars derailed near Jubilee Station in Winnipeg. Early reports suggest nine train cars were derailed around 3 a.m. on Sunday, a CN spokesperson told CBC News, with eight cars flipped over on their side and one upright. Environment Canada has issued yellow warnings for wintry conditions in parts of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Western, central and northern Nova Scotia, including Halifax, will also see freezing rain from Monday morning to Monday afternoon. The agency expects four to eight millimeters of freezing rain will fall in Nova Scotia, with higher amounts over higher terrain. In New Brunswick, the freezing rain duration will be longer – up to eight hours in some areas, and between five and 10 millimeters of precipitation. Environment Canada says people in those parts of the Maritimes will see freezing rain on Monday before ending overnight.

About 20 weather warnings from Environment Canada are set to remain in effect for swaths of the country over the weekend, as the weather agency forecasts more snowfall, blizzards, freezing rain, rain and shivering temperatures from coast to coast. Toronto could see between 20 and 40 millimetres of rain Sunday afternoon, Environment Canada says. Environment Canada also issued a yellow warning for freezing rain Sunday, noting it could lead to icy surfaces. But Environment Canada said Torontonians should expect strong winds Monday. U.S. President Donald Trump said Sunday he believes both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin truly want peace, as he welcomed the "brave" Ukrainian leader for talks at his Florida resort. Before Zelenskyy arrived, Trump spoke with Putin by phone for more than an hour, and planned to speak with him again soon after. Greeting Zelenskyy at Mar-a-Lago, Trump said of him: "This gentleman has worked very hard, and is very brave, and his people are very brave." Ushakov said Trump and Putin agreed to speak again "promptly" after Trump's meeting with Zelenskyy. Trump and Zelenskyy met at Trump's private club in Palm Beach, where the U.S. president is spending the holidays.

Often referred to as one of the last places in the world with year-round sea ice, these waters have historically been difficult to access because of the thickness of the ice. But melting sea ice has opened a path for a Canadian research icebreaker to sail through some of these passageways for the first time ever. The fact that an icebreaker is able to enter one of the world’s last refuges of sea ice is yet another startling sign of the effects of climate change. “We were finding really deteriorated and heavily melted sea ice.... Fortunately, both scientifically and personally, it was reassuring to know that we did start to find some thicker ice [further south],” he said.

After waiting four years to get his son the support the family says he needs to navigate school with learning challenges, a father from London, Ont. Richard Hackett, 41, started a petition earlier this month calling on Ottawa to recognize them under the consitution. “We shouldn’t be in this mess,” said Hackett, noting the petition garnered almost 5,000 signatures in three weeks.
