Russia’s state coronavirus task force reported 929 new deaths on Wednesday, the fourth time this month that daily COVID-19 deaths have reached record highs. Russia already has Europe’s highest death toll in the pandemic at over 212,000 people, but some official data suggests that is an undercount. In some regions, Russia’s vast yet severely underfunded health care system has started to show signs of being overwhelmed by the outbreak. However, reports by Russia’s state statistical service Rosstat that tally coronavirus-linked deaths retroactively reveal much higher mortality numbers. ___Follow all AP stories on the coronavirus pandemic at https://apnews.com/hub/coronavirus-pandemic.

On the lower end, the daily Asahi put Kishida’s approval rating at 45 percent while Mainichi put it at 49 percent. “I’m aware of the polling results, but also believe that there is quite a gap depending on the company that conducted the survey,” said Kishida to reporters on Wednesday morning. Oohamazaki said that with Kishida’s cabinet likely to be exposed to criticism from the opposition during parliamentary questioning starting Monday, approval ratings may continue to drop ahead of the elections. “I don’t think that drop will impact the election results too much, but we may be looking at the ruling coalition losing about 25 to 30 seats,” he said. The Yomiuri put support for Kishida’s LDP at 43 percent, up 7 percentage points from the previous poll.

HONG KONG, Oct 6 (Reuters) – Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam said on Wednesday the city was at a new starting point for development under a national security law imposed last year and her priority is to focus on tackling a long-standing housing shortage in the Chinese-ruled city. Authorities in Hong Kong and Beijing have long blamed unaffordable housing in the former British colony for deep-rooted social problems that they say helped fuel anti-government protests in 2019. Hong Kong is now ready again for a new start for economic development,” Lam said. “(It) will be the most important area in Hong Kong that facilitates our development integration with Shenzhen and connection with the GBA,” she said, referring to what is known as the Greater Bay Area. read moreThe average waiting time for public housing in Hong Kong has climbed steadily and now stands at more than 5.5 years.

It was based on a review of nearly 11.9 million records obtained from 14 firms that provide services in setting up offshore firms and shell companies. Setting up an offshore company is not illegal, but reinforces the perception that the wealthy and powerful play by different rules — a particularly upsetting notion for many Lebanese. Yet two years later the same politicians still run the country in the same way, protected by the sectarian-based system. Offshore companies, though not illegal, can be used to elude taxes or hide illicitly gained money. Prime Minister Mikati, a businessman who formed a new government last month, has owned a Panama-based offshore company since the 1990s.

BENICIA, Calif. (AP) — The machine Ted Bowman helped design can make water out of the air, and in parched California, some homeowners are already buying the pricey devices. The air-to-water systems work like air conditioners by using coils to chill air, then collect water drops in a basin. “Our motto is, water from air isn’t magic, it’s science, and that’s really what we’re doing with these machines,” said Ted Bowman, design engineer at Washington state-based Tsunami Products. Bowman said his company’s machines — made for use at homes, offices, ranches and elsewhere — dehumidify the air and in doing so create water that’s filtered to make it drinkable. Still, in California, where residents have been asked to conserve water because one of the worst droughts in recent history has depleted reservoirs, some homeowners are buying them to meet their water needs.

The Houston-based company took another three hours to notify the U.S. Coast Guard’s National Response Center for oil spills, investigators said, further slowing the response to an accident for which Amplify workers spent years preparing. That’s a fair question,” said Richard Kuprewicz, a pipeline consultant and private accident investigator from Redmond, Washington. Company representatives did not respond to emailed questions about the delay between the alarm and the shutdown. Problems with faulty leak detection procedures have plagued the industry for years, including during a massive 2010 oil spill that polluted 40 miles (64 kilometers) of Michigan’s Kalamazoo River. The change came after oil industry lobbying groups including the American Petroleum Institute said retrofitting lines with valves would cost up to $1.5 million per device.
