United Nations Security Council members voted in unison on Friday to renew the political mission in Afghanistan. The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) will continue for another 6 months. The mission mandate will deal with humanitarian efforts and development among other issues, and will not involve peacekeeping. The document stressed “the important role that the United Nations will continue to play in promoting peace and stability in Afghanistan.”Importance of a ‘representative government’ stressedThe United Nations Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) tweeted a copy of the resolution. CAIRO – 17 September 2021: The US administration, under President Joe Biden, signed an executive order on Friday that allows further sanctions against parties involved in Ethiopia’s Tigray conflict. This comes amid reports of atrocities committed by the Ethiopian forces in Tigray and that continue to emerge from the afflicted region. The new executive order, therefore, allows the US administration to take punitive action against the Ethiopian and Eritrean governments as well as the TPLF and the Amhara regional government. This comes in case they continue to pursue military conflict over negotiations, Reuters cited senior US administration officials as saying. The US has earlier called for a negotiated end to the Tigray conflict in many occasions and for aid access to Tigray.

US President Joe Biden on Friday issued an executive order that allows for sanctions on parties “complicit in prolonging” the conflict in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region. The fighting has left thousands of people dead and millions more in need of humanitarian aid. “The sanctions are not directed at the people of Ethiopia or Eritrea, but rather the individuals and entities perpetrating the violence and causing a humanitarian disaster,” the statement continued. The order establishes a new “sanctions regime targeting those responsible for prolonging the conflict, obstructing humanitarian access or preventing a ceasefire,” it added. Rich countries are making little progress towards meeting their pledge to provide annual climate change mitigation funds, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) said on Friday. “The limited progress in overall climate finance volumes between 2018 and 2019 is disappointing, particularly ahead of COP26 (the UN climate summit in November),” OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann said. According to the OECD, Germany and Canada are moving forward a plan to mobilize the additional finance required to reach the $100 billion annual goal. The international community committed to providing the annual funds during a 2009 UN climate summit in Copenhagen.
