KOZHIKODE: A legal battle has erupted in Kerala’s literary circles after the daughter of legendary writer M T Vasudevan Nair filed a criminal defamation complaint against the authors and publisher of a recently released memoir that discusses the life of his former wife. Earlier in January, Sitara and Aswathy V Nair, daughters of M T Vasudevan Nair, expressed their anguish over the contents of the book. The memoir, released in November 2025, blends personal recollections and essays about the life of late writer and teacher Prameela Nair, who was once married to MT. According to the authors, the book attempts to revisit Prameela’s life, her literary work and her struggles. However, members of MT’s family say the narrative makes unsubstantiated allegations about the writer’s personal conduct.

On December 29, the Supreme Court kept in abeyance its earlier decision regarding the 100-m definition of the Aravalli hills. (Express Photo)THE SUPREME Court’s Amicus Curiae in the Aravalli definition case has submitted that the report by the court’s Aravalli committee led by the Environment secretary “completely suppressed” the views of the Forest Survey of India (FSI) while recommending a 100-metre height definition for the hills. The Amicus Curiae’s submission also pointed out that the “unsigned and undated” report of the Aravalli panel did not have the approval of the SC’s Central Empowered Committee (CEC) and its “exclusionary” definition did not “sufficiently include landforms that constitute the Aravalli hills in order to protect and conserve the same.”On November 20, 2025, the SC accepted the recommendations of the Aravalli panel that any landform at an elevation of 100 metres or more above the local relief would be considered as part of Aravalli hills along with its slopes and adjacent land.

The idea that prisoners should remain behind bars and be punished rather than being reformed and rehabilitated has changed little. It can be inferred that the infrastructure is underused or inadequate in the states that do have OCIs or overcrowding in prisons would not be a problem everywhere. The OCIs allow prisoners to inhabit open barracks, do agricultural or other work, even stay with their families but return to the prison at night, all under monitoring. That the system is underused is clear from the Supreme Court’s condemnation of the low inclusion of women in OCIs, seen as blatant gender discrimination. The Supreme Court’s directions are a reminder of not just the need for but also the scale of reforms needed.

The city’s walls have been steadily turning into canvases in recent times. From the colourful murals brightening neighbourhoods such as Kannagi Nagar, Nungambakkam, and Guindy to striking portraits of home-grown personalities appearing across North Chennai, the city’s public spaces are increasingly being claimed by art alongside posters and political art works. Against this backdrop of a growing street wall art culture, the fifth edition of the Wall Art India initiative arrived in the city earlier this week, bringing an international urban art movement into conversation with the city’s growing visual landscape. Organised by the Alliance Française network in India, in collaboration with the Embassy of France in India and Institut Français, this festival is travelling across 15 cities in the country, bringing together four artists from India and France to create large-scale murals. The Chennai segment of ‘Wall Art India’ was hosted at Alliance Française Madras from March 1 to 4, where French artist Kashink worked on a mural that reflects this year’s theme of ‘Women, Horizons and New Voices in Urban Art’, in time for International Women’s Day.

Mohalla clinics were inaugurated by the Aam Aadmi Party government in 2015 as an initiative in decentralised, preventive, and free primary healthcare. However, the reliability of community-based primary care is eroding currently. These supply-side failures are interconnected, reflecting structural deficiencies in India’s primary care system: persistent understaffing, drug procurement obstacles, substandard facility conditions, and insufficient oversight. When primary care is inadequate, the responsibility transfers to hospitals or private practitioners, resulting in inflated expenditures and crowding in advanced facilities. Delhi’s initiative in community primary care demonstrated the potential of health systems engaging with individuals in their communities.

The Indian stock markets slumped to their weakest weekly performance in 14 months, after conflict erupted in the Middle East between the US, Israel and Iran on 28 February. On Friday, the Nifty 50 fell 1.27% to close at 24,450.45, while the Sensex declined 1.37% to end at 78,918.88, extending their decline following the prior session’s relief rally. Currency weakness added further pressure, with the rupee hitting a record low of 92.1488 against the US dollar on 4 March (Wednesday). Market volatility also spiked during the week, with the India VIX (Volatility Index)—a measure of the market's expectation of volatility in the Indian stock market over the next 30 days—rising from 13.70 to 19.88, signalling heightened investor nervousness and expectations of larger market swings ahead.
