Shop owners of New Market have threatened to go on strike unless security at the market is strengthened, following an alleged assault on one of them by a group of hawkers on Thursday. The shop owners met on Friday and decided to stage a token strike next week, warning of larger protests after Eid if their demands are not met. ADVERTISEMENTThursday’s trouble started with a squabble between a store owner of New Market and some hawkers over the unloading of goods. On Friday, the shop owners questioned whether they were secure in their stores given what had happened on Thursday. An official of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation’s (KMC) market department said the shop owners of New Market submitted a memorandum on Friday.

KOZHIKODE: A legal battle has erupted in Kerala’s literary circles after the daughter of legendary writer M T Vasudevan Nair filed a criminal defamation complaint against the authors and publisher of a recently released memoir that discusses the life of his former wife. Earlier in January, Sitara and Aswathy V Nair, daughters of M T Vasudevan Nair, expressed their anguish over the contents of the book. The memoir, released in November 2025, blends personal recollections and essays about the life of late writer and teacher Prameela Nair, who was once married to MT. According to the authors, the book attempts to revisit Prameela’s life, her literary work and her struggles. However, members of MT’s family say the narrative makes unsubstantiated allegations about the writer’s personal conduct.

On December 29, the Supreme Court kept in abeyance its earlier decision regarding the 100-m definition of the Aravalli hills. (Express Photo)THE SUPREME Court’s Amicus Curiae in the Aravalli definition case has submitted that the report by the court’s Aravalli committee led by the Environment secretary “completely suppressed” the views of the Forest Survey of India (FSI) while recommending a 100-metre height definition for the hills. The Amicus Curiae’s submission also pointed out that the “unsigned and undated” report of the Aravalli panel did not have the approval of the SC’s Central Empowered Committee (CEC) and its “exclusionary” definition did not “sufficiently include landforms that constitute the Aravalli hills in order to protect and conserve the same.”On November 20, 2025, the SC accepted the recommendations of the Aravalli panel that any landform at an elevation of 100 metres or more above the local relief would be considered as part of Aravalli hills along with its slopes and adjacent land.

The idea that prisoners should remain behind bars and be punished rather than being reformed and rehabilitated has changed little. It can be inferred that the infrastructure is underused or inadequate in the states that do have OCIs or overcrowding in prisons would not be a problem everywhere. The OCIs allow prisoners to inhabit open barracks, do agricultural or other work, even stay with their families but return to the prison at night, all under monitoring. That the system is underused is clear from the Supreme Court’s condemnation of the low inclusion of women in OCIs, seen as blatant gender discrimination. The Supreme Court’s directions are a reminder of not just the need for but also the scale of reforms needed.

CHENNAI: Mariana L Neisuler has assumed charge as the US Consul General at the US Consulate General in Chennai on Friday. Earlier, she served as counsellor for political and economic affairs at the US Embassy in Tashkent.
