They were chosen as the series’ traitors from the beginning of the show, which kicked off at the start of January.

The wheel has almost turned full circle for Denis Buckley. Buckley had turned 12 earlier in the week of his mascot appearance for Connacht. Back then sponsors Bank of Ireland used to present each mascot with a bank account with €100 in it. The late Tom Forde, whose son Cathal is now an established centre with Connacht, made the presentation afterwards to Buckley. “It’s a very proud club and a proud area and some great people that are behind all that,” said Buckley.

Over 15 years managing the women’s underage teams, he’d led teams to two U19 European Championship finals, an U17 Euros and fourth at the World Student Games. The concept of entering the U19 Ireland squad into the national league, limiting players from each club to two, was floated without gaining the internal will to proceed. Little, if any, interaction occurred between himself and the last three senior team managers and the executives tasked with melding the constituent parts allowed the gaps widen. “There was plenty of talk about the importance of women’s football but not much action,” he explains. “Lots of managers and heads of women’s football came in during my time and I was willing to help them all.

Novak Djokovic apologised for almost hitting a ball girl in an act that could have put his Australian Open hopes in jeopardy. But an incident in the second set might have proved very costly, with Djokovic carelessly sending a ball flying close to the head of a ball girl at the net. That was not necessary and in the heat of the moment. Things could have been very ugly.”Meanwhile, Stan Wawrinka toasted his Australian Open farewell after losing 7-6 (5) 2-6 6-4 6-4 to ninth seed Taylor Fritz. Sinner continued to look uncomfortable but, out of the punishing sun and with air conditioning cooling the arena, he battled to a 4-6 6-3 6-4 6-4 victory.

He claims he is being penalised for refusing, on religious grounds, to use a student’s preferred pronouns in the school where he taught. ICCL guideIn recent days it emerged in the pages of The Irish Times that schools are not legally obliged to address a student by their preferred pronouns. Dr O’Shea said there has been an explosion in gender questioning among young people since 2010, and anytime you put “must” in this area it will cause problems. “The vast majority of people who are gender questioning who I deal with will not be in the activist space pushing legislation. They will just want to quietly follow their gender journey and get on with their life in their preferred gender.

West Ham’s survival bid gathers more pace with win over SunderlandBy Andy Sims, Press AssociationWest Ham breathed some more life into their Premier League survival bid with a rousing 3-1 win over Sunderland. All looked lost for Nuno Espirito Santo’s increasingly beleaguered side less than two weeks ago when they slipped seven points adrift of safety. But it was West Ham who took the lead in the 14th minute when Bowen beat Reinildo Mandava down the right and stood up an inviting cross. Pity the few hundred West Ham fans who stayed away for the first 15 minutes, the latest in a series of protests against the club’s owners, and managed to miss the goal. But nothing could take the shine off a second straight win for West Ham and the glimmer of hope that maybe, just maybe, they are not finished yet.

I lived in silence for three days during a spartan retreat in central Nepal. The scale of the challenge quickly becomes clear by my complete failure on day one. At Lough Mardal the bedrooms are private off-grid yurts, with no electricity and a compost toilet. Wary of having my phone in my eye line, I keep it tucked away even after we leave Lough Mardal and head farther north. I read, I write, I go for walks without the extraordinary weight of the digital world in my pocket.

It was a deep shock this morning to hear of the passing of journalist Paddy Clancy — or, as many of us who worked for him in our youth would call him, Paddy “Both Barrels” Clancy. Along with the word “dash”, he would utter “point” — meaning full stop — and then “par”, meaning next paragraph. Paddy typically wore a cardigan and was often on the phone to his beloved wife, Bernie. One of my former colleagues at the Irish Examiner, Noel Baker, also trained under Clancy. “Paddy was gruff and brusque and the rest of it but once you got to know him, he was an incredible influence.

Novak Djokovic of Serbia reacts during his third round match against Botic van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands at the Australian Open tennis championship in Melbourne, Australia, Saturday, Jan. 24, 2026. (AP Photo/Dita Alangkara)Novak Djokovic came perilously close to being disqualified during his Australian Open third round match against Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp as he lost his cool and smashed a ball in anger that nearly hit a ball kid. Yet Van de Zandschulp recovered and was fighting his way back into contention when Djokovic lost his composure. Commentator Nick Lester and Henman then suggested Djokovic would not be making eye contact with the chair umpire after a near miss that could have ended what may be his final attempt to win an 11th Australian Open title. Djokovic eventually found a way to get through in straight sets, but he is fortunate to be looking forward to a fourth round match after his latest outburst.

Ice storm warnings are flashing from just east of El Paso all the way up to Maine. Meanwhile, in Minneapolis, where it is always cold in January, an Ice storm of a more visceral nature continues. But from that blast from nature came Rick Moody’s novel, The Ice Storm, and Ang Lee’s film, hailed by Brian De Palma as the film of the 1990s. This latest gargantuan weather event seems like a providential opening to the country’s 250th year and a bleak political atmosphere that feels inescapable. “Maybe the ice storm was a blessing in disguise.”
