Independent TD for Offaly, Deputy Carol NolanMercosur referral "a rare victory for common sense"Independent TD for Offaly Carol Nolan has welcomed the decision of the European Parliament to refer the EU Mercosur Partnership Agreement and its Interim Trade Agreement (ITA) to the European Courts of Justice (CJEU), describing it as "a rare victory for common sense. “An rud is annamh is iontach (what’s seldom is wonderful) as they say, and certainly this is a wonderful victory for everyone who believes that Mercosur is a legally dubious and economically reckless deal,” said Deputy Nolan. “There is breathing space now for other Member States to take on board the concerns that many of us have been making with respect to the glaring deficits contained within the Agreements.”“Hopefully this outbreak of common sense will find a reasonable hearing in the ECJ and that we can eventually consign the Agreement to the dustbin of EU trade history,” said Deputy Nolan.

Unfortunately, none of this chimes with the new Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) study showing how Irish adults vastly overestimate immigration and underestimate immigrants. Just over 4 in 10 born here have third level education; the figure for migrants is 6 in 10. The true figures are 9 per cent (for those born in Ireland) and 6 per cent. The aim of Steve Bannon, former Trump strategist and leading advocate of the “America First” immigration policy – to help Eddie Hobbs set up an Irish national party and anoint an Irish Trump by reaching out to the US diaspora – have been well publicised. The real question here is not whether the coming of an Irish Trump is likely, but why Irish and Irish-American Trump supporters haven’t already died of embarrassment.

What is it about the Americans who have inflicted Donald Trump on themselves and their fellow citizens as president? That Trump is now demonstrating what most sensible people always knew about him may well lose him popular support among American voters. How humiliating is it for ordinary Americans to be led by a man who demanded the Nobel Peace Prize and hijacked the award from María Machado? He has unlawfully renamed the US Department of Defense as the Department of War while demanding a Nobel Peace Prize. It is perhaps consoling that the worse Trump behaves the greater is our room for optimism.

Following a vote today in the European Parliament, the motion was carried to put the Mercosur trade deal before the European Court of Justice. The Mercosur trade deal will now be referred to the European Court of Justice for review. Even with the referral and pending approval, the EU could still apply the agreement; however, the European Parliament will still have the power to annul it. “This is not a vote on the Mercosur trade deal itself, but it is a decisive move that could delay ratification by up to two years and could even stop this deal entirely. MEP Billy Kelleher said the referral vote was a welcome one.

Barclays Bank Ireland, the registered name of Barclays Europe, dates to 1978, but had only about €3 billion of assets at the time of the Brexit referendum. Barclays Bank Ireland swung into a net profit of €268 million in the first half of last year from a €102 million loss for the same period last year. Barclays Europe is seeking necessary legal and regulatory approvals to convert its corporate form into a European public limited company, or Societas Europaea (SE).

Following a year away from competition, Bottas will be back on the grid in 2026 after signing with F1 newcomers Cadillac. ‌Yet his prospects of scoring points straight away will be hindered by a grid penalty he's required to serve at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix in March. The sanction stems from his final F1 race, driving for Sauber at the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where he crashed into Kevin Magnussen - who was also competing in his last race before being dropped by Haas. ‌Bottas was forced to retire from that race before he could serve a time penalty, resulting in a five-place grid drop for his next Grand Prix appearance.
