The LIV pair have so far refused to pay seven-figure sanctions imposed on them by the DP World Tour since their defections to the breakaway circuit two years ago. Beyond dispute is that whoever leads Europe at the next Ryder Cup will desperately hope to have Hatton and Rahm available. I've always been extremely proud to be a member on the DP World Tour, and certainly over the last couple of years, I've shown commitment to playing events here. And then with the Ryder Cup, I've been fortunate to play the last four.

The future of the EU-Mercosur free trade deal has been thrown into doubt by a European Parliament decision to refer the landmark deal to the courts, potentially holding up its ratification by two years. However, MEPs on Wednesday first voted to refer the trade agreement to the European Court of Justice (ECJ), to rule on whether it complies with EU treaties. Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly criticised the push to refer the trade agreement to the courts. Ursula von der Leyen’s commission has the power to bring the trade agreement into force provisionally, before future sign off by MEPs. “Today is a good day, and hopefully will give momentum to the campaign to stop this rotten trade deal,” Sinn Féin’s MEP Lynn Boylan said.

US president Donald Trump descended on Davos, Switzerland, on Wednesday, ahead of an economic speech overshadowed by fraying transatlantic ties and his push to acquire Greenland. Trump told a news conference on Tuesday that he would have meetings about the Danish territory of Greenland in Davos and was optimistic that an agreement could eventually be reached. "President Trump and other leaders are right... We have to protect the Arctic against Russian and Chinese influence," he said during a panel discussion. In a breach of diplomatic protocol, Mr Trump released the text of a private message he received from Emmanuel Macron in which the French president urged Mr Trump to join him and other G7 leaders in Paris after Davos, an idea Mr Trump dismissed.
