The Macroom Bypass on the N22 in Cork closed in both directions on Tuesday due to multiple traffic collisions. Gardaí said multiple collisions occurred on the bypass, including one involving a truck, prompting the closure. In an update shortly after 11.30am, Cork County Council said the Macroom Bypass was "closed in both directions", with diversions being put in place. "All Priority 1 and Priority 2 routes were treated last night and again early this morning as planned," the council said. The council urged motorists travelling on Tuesday to drive with caution.

Irish authorities are being urged to take action against X after reports its AI tool, Grok, is being used to generate and disseminate sexually explicit images of children and women. X users have been able to avail of a new tool called “edit image” on Grok since late last month. Concern has been raised about use of the tool in the generation of sexual abuse material, particularly relating to children. “Under Irish law, child abuse images refers to any representation (visual, audio, or text) depicting or implying sexual exploitation of a person under 18," she said. On Monday, the European Commission spokesman for digital affairs, Thomas Regnier, called the content illegal and appalling.

Prison authorities have been directed to bring schoolteacher Enoch Burke to the central office of the High Court on Tuesday so he may, should he wish, initiate an action against a disciplinary appeals panel. When Judge Nolan said he would consider the matter over lunch and discuss with the High Court’s chief registrar whether it was appropriate for the court to entertain the application, Mr Burke repeatedly kept telling the court it was urgent. Judge Nolan said he intended dealing with a family law matter and would sit again at 2pm, directing that the gardaí be notified. Enoch Burke has spent Christmas in prison for repeatedly breaching court orders. Burke has spent just under 600 days in prison on foot of contempt of court orders.

Almost €80,000 has been donated to help fund cancer care for a six-year-old boy whose suspected broken nose led to a cancer diagnosis. Last summer, Darragh Foley developed a bump on his nose that was first treated as a broken nose and re-set into position. But after bruising went down and the nose still looked broken, a doctor in Cork’s South Infirmary ordered an ultrasound and MRI which showed a mass on his nose. Three days after a biopsy was done, he was diagnosed with a soft tissue cancer called rhabdomyosarcoma, which is a very aggressive form of cancer that can be resistant to chemotherapy. “We have only been able to get to this point in treatment with amazing help from our friends and support from different charities.

Cork Airport recorded its busiest year in its history during 2025 with 3.46m passengers flying to and from the airport driven by a large increase in travellers from UK provincial cities as well as Germany. In the decade since 2015, passenger traffic at Cork Airport has grown by 67%. In European markets, passenger traffic to and from Germany was up 61% while passenger traffic to and from Belgium was up 29% and traffic to and from Switzerland was up 27%. Cork Airport added several new routes during 2025 with Aer Lingus now flying from the airport to Bilbao, Bordeaux, Prague, and Geneva. Cork Airport is also undergoing significant development with €200m being allocated for projects in May last year.

Modella said in a statement that the climate on UK high streets was “extremely challenging” and data suggested “an alarming drop-off in pre-Christmas footfall”. Modella said administration was the “only option” for both Claire’s and The Original Factory Shop, and it had started insolvency proceedings for both chains.
