Cereulide is produced by some strains of the bacterium, bacillus cereus, which can cause food poisoning. Best known from his time at AA Ireland, Mr Faughnan brings decades of independent expertise at a moment when Irish motorists are facing rising ownership costs, regulatory change and growing confusion around vehicle choice, Carzone said. His appointment as its independent motoring expert signals a deliberate move by Carzone, which aims to strengthen independent scrutiny and expert commentary for motorists navigating an increasingly complex market, the company said. Carzone is part of Mediahuis Group, which also owns the Irish Independent. In his role with Carzone, Mr Faughnan will deliver independent commentary and analysis on key motoring issues, including vehicle choice, ownership costs, safety, regulation and emerging technologies, the company said.

Another fire broke out at a newly opened playground in Chapelizod which has been described by a Dublin councillor as an “attack on everyone who worked so hard to deliver it”. Sinn Féin councillor Daithí Doolan said that the newly opened Chapelizod playground in the west of Dublin was subject to an “attack by arsonists”. "Chapelizod playground has been attacked by arsonists, this behaviour is unacceptable,” he said. The newly opened playground was one of three which opened over the course of 2025, bringing the total number of playgrounds in the capital’s city parks to 74. Chapelizod playground has been damaged by vandals.

Snow and icy conditions have taken hold across the west of Ireland, with some minor disruption reported to flights in and out of Ireland West Airport Knock as the wintry weather is set to continue into tomorrow morning. Despite the challenging conditions, no flights have been cancelled at Knock Airport today, with most services operating largely as normal and only a small number of delays reported. Arrivals into Ireland West Airport Knock have been mostly unaffected. The outbound 8.30am return flight departed Knock just 18 minutes behind schedule at 8.48am and landed in Scotland at 9.53am.

Irish Rail has said there is currently “no plan, no policy, no funding, and no project” to reinstate the railway line between Midleton and Youghal. He said Irish Rail hopes to apply for planning permission “in the next couple of weeks” for new park and ride railway stations at Dunkettle and Kilbarry in Blackpool. Irish Rail intends to place an order for 21 new electric trains, at a cost of €280m, in 2028. Mr Cronin said he is aware of capacity issues and Irish Rail is trying to acquire additional rolling stock to address this. The East Cork Rail Alliance, which has collected 20,000 signatures to have the Youghal line reopened, is to address the East Cork Municipal District Council next month.

I wouldn’t say Christmas was a trial, but we got through it in the same way housemates might get through a lease: Making do with our lot and ploughing on, because no other option was on the table. Even minus the Christmas stuff, our home is bursting at the seams, but we have decreased the amount of candle logs in the house by at least 80%. You’re ready. Because as much as we are ready to say goodbye to the decorations, the desserts are here for life, not just for Christmas.
