Nearly 500 migrants who tried to cross the central Mediterranean have been brought back to Libya, according to a UN spokesman, two days after charity groups lost contact with the boat carrying them, Reuters reported. “Libya is an unsafe port where migrants should never be brought back,” Flavio Di Giacomo, a spokesman for the UN’s International Organisation for Migration wrote on Twitter. He told Reuters there were 485 migrants and they docked in the Libyan port of Benghazi on Friday. Alarm Phone, a group that picks up calls from migrant vessels in distress, had no signs from the boat since Wednesday morning. The Italian Coast Guard reported on Thursday the rescue of 423 and 671 migrants in two separate operations in Italian search and rescue waters, and Alarm Phone said they were unrelated to the missing boat.

They pay for it by giving Russia prime access to their oil, gas, gold, diamonds and valuable minerals. Somalia had voted in favour of Ukraine resolution but has been working on improving relations with Russia that were severed in 1978 when Moscow backed Ethiopia in a war with Somalia.

Today, the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) along with French and other North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) troops are operating in numerous states throughout the region. Although there is the reemergence of military coups in several West African states, the mass sentiment from the workers, farmers and youth is decisively anti-imperialist. Sudan was also required to “normalize” relations with the State of Israel as part of the Abraham Accord initiatives aimed at undermining solidarity with the Palestinian national struggle. Sudan and Libya are continuing to reveal the negative impact of neo-colonialism in the 21st century. It is no longer a question of whether African Independent States should pursue a capitalist or non-capitalist path of development.

EU and Italian complicity in crimes against humanity in Libya has yet to grip the public debate among EU circles, says the lead author of a new European Parliament study. The findings are part of a larger European Parliament study, authored by Carrera and others, and published earlier this week. EU and Italian complicity was further entrenched following a February handover of EU-financed patrol boats to the Libyan Coast Guard, he said. For its part, the European Commission says its objective is to help to improve the situation of the people stranded in Libya. "Not doing anything is not an answer," said an EU commission spokesperson in March, in response to the UN report.

TRIPOLI, Libya - Oil-rich but war-scarred Libya has for years been ruled by two rival governments, but now some analysts see faint signs of progress toward reconciliation between them. Bashagha was suspended on May 16 by the eastern-based parliament, which also announced an investigation against him for unspecified reasons. Tripoli-based interim Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah has meanwhile used the“paralysis of the eastern government to consolidate his grip on political and economic life in Libya”, he said. The head of the UN Support Mission in Libya, Abdoulaye Bathily, has said he hopes for an agreement“by mid-June” to hold elections before the end of this year. He told the UN Security Council last month that“intensive consultations have taken place amongst security actors” and said“there has been a new dynamic in Libya”.

While the Tripoli-based government has no known air power of its own, allied Turkish military forces have previously deployed drones in western Libya. The GNU said "our national air force" had targeted what it called criminal gangs involved in trafficking fuel, drugs and people in western coastal areas. Libya has had little stability since the 2011 NATO-backed uprising against Muammar Gaddafi and it split in 2014 between rival eastern and western factions although there has been no major warfare since a 2020 ceasefire. Most western armed factions continued to back the GNU, as did Turkey which had helped the Tripoli government fight off an eastern assault in early 2020. However, some factions in the west oppose the GNU and last summer there were clashes in Tripoli between the two sides as the prime minister designated by the parliament in eastern Libya attempted to enter the capital.
