The Sydney Opera House has reviewed the rules for the lighting of its iconic sails, as new figures reveal the shells were lit up a record one night in every five last year – with most illuminations coming at the request of the former NSW government. New Arts Minister John Graham will consider the findings of the review, which was the first in a decade to examine the number, frequency and duration of projections at the cultural landmark. “The 2012 framework for lighting the sails was in dire need of an update, and the NSW government thanks the Sydney Opera House Trust for carrying out its review of the policy. Its findings are currently being considered,” Graham said. News of the review comes just weeks after the Minns government intervened to block a projection to mark the coronation of King Charles III on cost grounds and as the Opposition continues to question the government’s decision.

Copy LinkPresident Volodymyr Zelensky made a landmark visit to Hiroshima for talks with G7 leaders Saturday, after securing long-sought access to advanced US fighter jets for Ukraine’s war effort. He arrived significantly buoyed by what he called a “historic” White House decision to allow Ukraine access to F-16 jets, among the most sophisticated materiel yet supplied by the West. They are also a potent symbol of Western support for Ukraine, forestalling any talk of waning interest as the conflict grinds on. Zelensky also met separately with the Italian and British prime ministers, and talks with the French and US presidents are expected. The grouping also warned China against its “militarization” in the South China Sea and urged Beijing to press Russia to end its invasion of Ukraine.

by Alberto Galvi –The Tobruk House of Representatives voted on May 16 to suspend and investigate Prime Minister Fathi Bashagha of the parallel government based in Sirte, accusing him of not having achieved the expected objectives. The other Libyan government is based in Tripoli, and is led by Prime Minister Abdul Hamid al-Dbeibah. Former Interior Minister Bashagha, who was elected prime minister in February 2022, tried to install his government in the capital last May, arriving in Tripoli with some of his ministers, but was ousted, which has led to clashes between militias. Bashagha then released a statement to the Tobruk Parliament on May 16 announcing that he would transfer his duties to Deputy Prime Minister Ali Qatrani. Haftar recently met with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, and the weakening of Bashagha’s figure would suggest a diplomatic move aimed at achieving the longed-for national unity of Libya, necessary for Italy both for investments and for the control of migratory flows.

The violence of men, and Tunisia's politics throughout the Arab Spring are constantly in the background. "Four Daughters is an enthralling narrative about memory, motherhood and the inherited traumas of a patriarchal society," said The Hollywood Reporter. "I wanted to explore the violence that we transmit from mother to daughter that is not unique to Tunisian society," Ben Hania told AFP, calling it a "curse". Several non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Italy have condemned Europe’s response to the migration crisis, calling for immediate action to increase search and rescue operations, ensuring the safety of those attempting these dangerous crossings. The NGOs argue that governments must prioritize saving lives over restrictive border control policies. They have urged European nations to adopt a more compassionate and humanitarian approach in dealing with irregular migration instead, stressing the importance of addressing the root causes of migration, such as poverty, conflict, and lack of opportunities.
