The Ministry of Defence representing the Tripoli-based Libyan government led by Abd Alhamid Aldabaiba announced today that it had conducted air strikes in the West Coast region. The announcement came after local social media followed by local media reported drone strikes in various areas of Zawia. The Defence Ministry also reported strikes later in the Zuwara area. Those opposed to the strikes have insisted that the strikes were conducted by Turkish drones and not Libyan ones. The Ministry of Defence also calls on all citizens to fully cooperate with the military forces and the General Staff in military operations, which will not stop until all of its objectives are achieved’’.

TRIPOLI : Libya's Government of National Unity (GNU) said it had conducted air strikes against smuggling networks on Thursday, with blasts hitting a western city that is home to armed factions that have backed a rival administration. Three residents of Zawiya, just west of Tripoli, said they had heard explosions on Thursday with one also hearing gunfire. While the Tripoli-based government has no known air power of its own, allied Turkish military forces have previously deployed drones in western Libya. The GNU said "our national air force" had targeted what it called criminal gangs involved in trafficking fuel, drugs and people in western coastal areas. Libya has had little stability since the 2011 NATO-backed uprising against Muammar Gaddafi and it split in 2014 between rival eastern and western factions though there has been no major warfare since a 2020 ceasefire.

But the message to everyone watching was resoundingly clear: Chadian rebels were a force to be reckoned with, and they knew how to exploit regional instability to their advantage. These socio-economic conditions, which have served as an impetus for Chadian rebels, reflect deep-rooted issues within the country’s socio-political fabric. The fluctuating roles, regular casualties, and ongoing recruitment make it challenging to accurately quantify the number of Chadian fighters. In Libya, Chadian fighters crossed battle lines, aligning with rival factions for the right price. He is the author of several publications on the Chadian rebellion, including Soldiers of Fortune: The Future of Chadian Fighters After the Libyan Ceasefire.

As part of this reciprocity update, the visa fees have now been standardized and reciprocity fees have been completely removed for Libyan citizens, it added. Students from both countries who qualify for a student visa will now receive multiple entry visas valid for one year whereas previously a single-entry visa was issued, according to the statement. “These significant visa changes will help facilitate legitimate travel for diplomatic, educational, cultural, and business purposes and more importantly deepen people-to-people bonds between our two countries,” it pointed out.

In addition, “the opposition did not campaign heavily in the area and could not offer an alternative, credible message,” Esen said. The Turkish leader mentions these messages often on the campaign trail, trying to blame them on Kilicdaroglu. Kilicdaroglu is trying to do the same, telling Tuesday’s rally that “nobody should ever doubt” his ability to rebuild the region. Campaigning any harder might have given the impression that the opposition was trying to profit from people’s grief, Tiryaki said. “The Turkish left is no longer the same,” he said in Kirikhan, a northern Hatay district that backed Erdogan.

Government will respect any decision taken by the country’s institutions on the hospitals contract, former Labour mayor Daniel Attard has said. We respect our institutions and we respect their conclusion," Attard said on Saviour Balzan’s Xtra on Monday evening. The panel was discussing latest revelations on the hospitals deal, after a joint investigation revealed former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat is being probed by the police or his consultancy contract with a Swiss company that could have been used to disguise payments from the Vitals-Steward hospitals deal. “In 2016, it was Chris Fearne himself who requested an Auditor General investigation into the deal,” Attard said. “The AG is telling Robert Abela’s government to go after the money they stole from us,” he said.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida attends a meeting at the G7 leaders' summit in Hiroshima on May 21. By Kantaro Komiya and Satoshi SugiyamaJapanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said on Wednesday the country had no plans to become a NATO member but acknowledged the security alliance's plan to open a liaison office in Japan. "I am not aware of any decision made" at NATO regarding the establishment of the office, Kishida told a Wednesday parliament session, adding his country was not planning to join NATO as a member or semi-member state. In May 2022, Mr. Bachagha had attempted a coup to enter Tripoli, but after violent clashes, his supporters had been repelled. Former Minister of the Interior, Mr. Bachagha had also allied himself with Aguila Saleh. Their desire to get along "is one of the reasons for the fall of Bachagha" , according to him. And this with the "blessing" of Egypt, an ally of the Eastern camp and until then fiercely opposed to Mr. Dbeibah. An essential step before any possible agreement to organize elections, according to him.

Rival Libyan groups reached an agreement on long-awaited presidential and legislative elections in the country during a meeting in the North African country of Morocco, which many see as a significant step toward ending years of chaos and instability. The Libyan Joint Committee 6+6, formed jointly by Libya's House of Representatives and High Council for the preparation of electoral laws, made an announcement late Tuesday after two days of talks between rival groups in Bouznika, a resort city south of the capital Rabat. Both legislative and presidential elections will be held simultaneously, ensuring a comprehensive electoral procedure, Abu Buleifa added. The committee was formed in March by 12 members from the Libyan House of Representatives and the High State Council, with 6 members from each. Libya has been torn by civil war and instability since the ouster of longtime ruler Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

The Attorney General is yet to decide on whether or not to indict three men rescued at sea in 2019 by the container ship El Hiblu 1 on charges which include terrorist offences, a court has been told this morning. If indicted, the men will have to face a criminal trial before the superior courts and the prospect of imprisonment for life. The captain had claimed that the crew had locked themselves in the bridge as the migrants had acted aggressively. When the compilation of evidence continued this morning before magistrate Nadine Lia, the magistrate observed that the Office of the Attorney General had filed a note yesterday, asking for more time to decide whether to file a bill of indictment. The court therefore sent the acts of the case back to the Attorney General, with the case now being expected to continue in June.

The Tripoli-based Government of National Unity (GNU) said Tuesday that Libya’s ambassador to Austria and permanent representative to international organizations, Osama Abdel-Hadi, discussed with an Austrian delegation, headed by the Director General of Vienna International Airport, the possibility of opening airspace, the return of air traffic between the two countries, and the operation of 3 flights per week. GNU said the possibility of opening airspace with Austria ‘‘was welcomed by the Austrian side, expressing its readiness to support this step, and implement it as quickly as possible’’. It added that this initiative comes after the Ministry of Transportation agreed, earlier, with its Maltese counterpart to resume air traffic between the two countries, as the first agreement related to European airspace.

The response this time came from Libyan Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, the military arm of a House of Representatives elected way back in 2014 – the most recent Libyan elections – and subsequently relocated to Tobruk that same year. Without clear and practical answers from UNSMIL to these crucial questions, elections could deliver nothing but more catastrophe for Libya. Reflecting on the past 12 years, this scenario also appears to be a chimera for Libya.
