OTTAWA — Liberal MP and former finance minister Chrystia Freeland says she will resign as an MP in “coming weeks” after accepting a role as adviser on economic development to Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Freeland resigned from Prime Minister Mark Carney’s cabinet in September and announced she would not be running in the next federal election. “One cannot be a Canadian MP and an advisor to a foreign government. She should resign as advisor or as MP for University-Rosedale,” Conservative foreign affairs critic Michael Chong wrote on social media. The former deputy prime minister under former prime minister Justin Trudeau had sought the Liberal leadership last year, but lost to Carney.

The NHL's department of player safety suspended Calgary Flames forward John Beecher and Winnipeg Jets defenceman Logan Stanley one game each Sunday for separate roughing incidents. The bare-knuckle punch occurred moments after McCarron dropped his gloves and began swinging on Beecher as a scrum ensued near the Flames bench. Beecher, 24, received a roughing minor and a 10-minute misconduct at the time. The 27-year-old Stanley was assessed a roughing minor and an illegal equipment minor while Tkachuk, who was furious after receiving the blow, was given a 10-minute misconduct. Beecher has played 155 games, while Stanley has suited up in 242.

Late last year, following a visit by Prime Minister Mark Carney to the Middle East, Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon announced the expansion of air transport agreements with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The reciprocal deal will allow Canadian carriers to send the same amount of flights to the Middle East. in past years after diplomatic spats over human rights issues and a lack of reciprocal benefits for Canada’ airlines. A CBC News story suggests that the expanded air agreements will put pressure on Canadian airlines, as they try to compete with the services offered by Middle East carriers. In mid-November, Air Canada and Emirates expanded a previous three-year strategic partnership until 2032.

Instead of dreading a threat of quotas, pension funds are now bringing their ideas to the government. Under the program, the Australian government raised more than $23 billion AUD to fund new infrastructure projects by selling or leasing assets that were already producing returns to pension funds. Notably, the Caisse de dépôt and another Canadian pension fund, the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS), participated in the Australian program, buying stakes in assets from electricity transmission to ports. Transport Canada also owns and operates a number of smaller airports in British Columbia, Manitoba, Quebec and Newfoundland.

Airlines in Canada could soon be under pressure from customers to improve their services as the federal government opens its skies to more competition from the Middle East.
