I have worked in the specialty coffee trade for over a decade and, like many people in the industry, I believed for much of that time that specialty coffee was sustainable. With almost all companies in the specialty coffee industry claiming to pay better prices to producers, then the environment must naturally be taken care of, right? Another surprise came when we started to market our solution to brands and traders associated with the specialty coffee sector. It makes me wonder: Is the specialty coffee industry falling behind? In my opinion, what really needs to change in the specialty coffee industry is the narrative.

After 30 years, Ethiopia’s status was reduced from ownership of two ports to using two ports, Djibouti and Assab, through trade rules and agreements with the respective countries. That was further reduced to the use of the port of Djibouti after disagreements and conflict with Eritrea. He mentioned recent news of missile attacks coming from Yemen, which is only about 28, 29 km sea width from Djibouti. If the big powers there start shooting at camps on other side, it leaves Ethiopia, a country with a population of 120 million, without options. He questioned how saying ‘let’s share the Airline’ be taken as equivalent to war.

Since then, Ethiopia has been fully dependent on its neighbours – especially Djibouti – for access to ports and international shipping routes. Yet Abiy is clear that his country will gain favourable access to the sea and key international trading routes – one way or the other. Abiy is increasingly sounding and acting like another world leader whose imperial ambitions and aggression have already caused immense pain and suffering: Russia’s President Vladimir Putin. Abiy’s Ethiopia clearly has ambitions to not only gain access to the sea but become a great power in the world. African nations should put an end to Abiy’s imperial ambitions for good, before it is too late.

Ethiopian Airlines has placed an order for up to 67 Boeing aircraft as it aims to become one of the top 20 leading carriers globally by 2035. The orders are part of the Addis Ababa-based carrier's 2035 strategic road map, which include plans to double its fleet to 270 aircraft, Mesfin Tasew, group chief executive of Ethiopian Airlines Group, said. Ethiopian Airlines will lease Boeing 787 and Max planes while waiting for the new aircraft, after plane manufacturers' fully-booked schedules meant it could not secure earlier deliveries. Of these, more than 70 per cent of commercial deliveries are expected to be single-aisle jets, it said. Ethiopian Airlines, the launch customer for the Dreamliner in Africa, has been a Boeing customer for nearly 75 years, and the new agreement is expected to boost the efficiency of its fleet.
