Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, while addressing parliament Tuesday, accused Eritrean troops fighting alongside Ethiopian forces of mass killings in the war, during which more than 400,000 people are estimated to have died. Ethiopia lost sovereign access to the Red Sea when Eritrea seceded in 1993 after decades of guerrilla warfare. Gebremeskel said the prime minister has only recently changed his tune in his push for access to the Red Sea. In June, Eritrea accused Ethiopia of having a “long-brewing war agenda” aimed at seizing its Red Sea ports. Ethiopia recently said that Eritrea was “actively preparing to wage war against it.”

ShareCAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — NASA’s long-awaited moonshot with astronauts is off until at least March because of hydrogen fuel leaks that marred the dress rehearsal of its giant new rocket. It’s the same problem that delayed the Space Launch System rocket’s debut three years ago. That first test flight was grounded for months because of leaking hydrogen, which is highly flammable and dangerous. Until the exasperating fuel leaks, the space agency had been targeting as soon as this weekend for humanity’s first trip to the moon in more than half a century. Amit Kshatriya, NASA’s associate administrator, stressed that the Space Launch System is “an experimental vehicle,” with more lessons to be learned.

Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has hit out at Eritrea's army for committing atrocities during the two-year war in the northern Tigray region, which ended in 2022. Eritrean forces fought alongside the Ethiopian army against local Tigrayan fighters for control of Tigray, which borders Eritrea. Friendly relations were forged further during the Tigray war, but have of late given way to a war of words over the Red Sea - something landlocked Ethiopia wants access to through Eritrea. All sides were accused of committing atrocities during the Tigray war - with some of the worst abuses blamed on Eritrean troops. An AU envoy estimated that 600,000 people were killed during the two-year Tigray war.

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has welcomed a contribution of USD 5.5 million from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) to help prevent malnutrition in pregnant and breastfeeding women and young children by improving access to healthy, nutritious foods, strengthening local food systems, and building community resilience among food insecure families in Ethiopia. The contribution was announced during a launching ceremony in Addis Ababa on December 16, 2025, where Dr. Dereje Dugma, State Minister of Health, emphasized how the initiative aligns with government efforts to improve nutrition and resilience for food insecure families. “WFP is grateful to KOICA for this strategic investment, delivered in partnership with the Ministry of Health. This is critical to advance Ethiopia’s food and nutrition security and human capital outcomes.” said Zlatan Milisić, WFP’s Country Director in Ethiopia. “This will deliver a triple impact: improved nutrition for vulnerable families, stronger local food systems, and greater household resilience through better access to diverse diets and best agricultural practices.”

Egypt, a close ally of the US which depends on the Nile for 97 percent of its water, considers the dam an "existential threat". In Davos last month on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum, Trump backed that claim, saying the dam "was financed by the United States and it basically blocks the Nile". "We did not receive a single birr (the Ethiopian currency) in loans or financial aid from any foreign sources for the construction of the mega-dam. Salini also said the project was entirely financed by Ethiopia. Trump, a longtime ally of his Egyptian counterpart, pledged to "get negotiations back on track" between Cairo and Addis Ababa.

Ethiopia, which defaulted on the bond in December 2023, formalised a restructuring deal with official creditors last July, paving the way for talks with bondholders. Under the terms of that deal, bondholders would take a 15% write down on the principal amount through an exchange for a new $850 million bond maturing in mid-2029. “The OCC will continue to support the Ethiopian authorities in their efforts to reach an agreement comparable to the OCC’s debt treatment, and stands ready to engage in good faith with all parties to reach such an outcome,” it said. Separately, the International Monetary Fund, which provides calculations on Ethiopia’s debt levels, raised projections for export earnings and reserves. Ethiopia’s bond shed close to half a cent this Monday, to bid at 105.08 cents on the Dollar, Tradeweb data showed, extending its losses after the official creditors’ announcement on Friday.

Ethiopians „March Forward“ once again in DubaiIf there’s a soundtrack to the annual Dubai Marathon, it is the Ethiopian national anthem; so frequently have athletes from the East African nation won the event. In making it six in a row for Ethiopian debutant men in Dubai, Melak’s victory was particularly impressive. If Melak was following a tradition, albeit recent of debutant winners in Dubai, Dessie exhibited a habit that many athletes can only envy. Nibret Melak ETH 2:04:002. Anchinalu Dessie ETH 2:18:312.

Hunted by government drones, Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) commander Jaal Marroo denies his fighters target civilians. Yet, as a hidden humanitarian crisis deepens, international investigators accuse both sides of atrocities, leaving millions trapped in a deadly stalemate. While the government claims military gains and returns of displaced people, abductions and banditry plague the region, with civilians paying the highest price. The roots of grievanceThe conflict stems from deep-seated Oromo grievances of political and economic marginalization within Ethiopia’s ethnic federal system—a sentiment persisting despite Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed being Oromo himself. With the war hidden and a path to peace unclear, civilians remain caught in a devastating crossfire.
