Tropical Storm Max has hit Mexico's southern Pacific coast, as the country braces for a second punch from Tropical Storm LidiaMEXICO CITY -- Tropical Storm Max made landfall in Mexico’s southern Pacific coast Monday, as the country braces for a second punch from Tropical Storm Lidia, expected to hit Tuesday as a hurricane in a different part of the country. Max was located about 40 miles (65 kilometers) east of the resort town of Zihuatanejo with winds of about 60 mph (95 kph) and was moving inland at about 7 mph (11 kph). Mexico's Civil Defense office said Max was causing “torrential” rain in the states of Guerrero and Michoacan. On Tuesday, Lidia was located about 375 miles (605 kilometers) southwest of the Islas Marias and was moving east-northeast at 8 mph (13 kph). Its winds increased to about 70 mph (110 kph), but the storm could have winds as high as 100 mph (160 kph) when it makes landfall in Nayarit state around Tuesday.

Another magnitude earthquake hits western Afghanistan
Another 4.9 magnitude earthquake jolted western Afghanistan on Monday as the government’s death toll from Saturday’s quake reached more than 2,000. The new tremors were confirmed by the U.S. Geological Survey and residents in the area. The 6.3 magnitude quake at the weekend completely destroyed at least 13 villages in Herat province’s Zindah Jan district. Local residents from other areas as well as rescue teams were still trying to remove bodies from under the rubble. Rivian’s missteps last week were ‘another gut punch’ for investors, says Wedbush
Rivian Automotive Inc.’s missteps last week when it followed strong production and delivery numbers with news of a dilutive $1.5 billion convertible debt offering was “another gut punch to investors,” according to Wedbush analyst Dan Ives. The stock fell 23% on Thursday to suffer its biggest one-day decline since it went public in November 2021. News of the debt came as the company offered a preliminary third-quarter sales estimate of between $1.29 billion and $1.33 billion. The company estimated it had cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments of $9.1 billion as of Sept. 30. Rivian’s stock has gained 2.7% in the year to date, while the S&P 500 SPX has gained 12%.

FG grows national grid power capacity to 14,000MW
The Federal Government through the Association of Power Generation Companies has grown the power capacity of the national grid from 13, 000megawatts recorded a few years ago to about 14,000 MW. APGC’s Executive Secretary, Dr. Joy Ogaji, while speaking with The PUNCH on the sideline of the Association of Energy Correspondents of Nigeria’s 2023 annual international strategic conference last week Thursday, said electricity generation capacity to the national grid has increased to almost 14,000MW. “The national grid now has an installed power generation capacity of about 14, 000 megawatts, and this was made possible due to the Zungeru plant that came on stream this year,” she said, adding that it was an opportunity for interested investors to partner with the Gencos. The company had offered a fee of $700m per year for a period of 30 years to operate the plant. Despite the 14,000MW claim by Ojagi, checks by The PUNCH on the records of the Nigerian Electricity System Operator showed that the latest on-grid peak power generation as of Saturday, was 4,803.60 MW.

End-September 2023 GIR level settles at US$98.7 billion
The country’s gross international reserves (GIR) level, based on preliminary data, settled at US$98.7 billion as of end-September 2023 from the end-August 2023 level of US$99.6 billion. [1]The latest GIR level represents a more than adequate external liquidity buffer equivalent to 7.3 months’ worth of imports of goods and payments of services and primary income. [2]Moreover, it is also about 5.7 times the country’s short-term external debt based on original maturity and 3.6 times based on residual maturity. Similarly, the net international reserves, which refers to the difference between the BSP’s reserve assets (GIR) and reserve liabilities (short-term foreign debt and credit and loans from the International Monetary Fund (IMF)), decreased by US$0.8 billion to US$98.7 billion as of end-September 2023 from the end-August 2023 level of US$99.5 billion. [1] The BSP’s reserve assets consist of foreign investments, gold, foreign exchange, reserve position in the IMF, and special drawing rights.
