Information emerged on Friday that gunmen allegedly killed two soldiers attached to the Ekaago-Ogboloma-Adada Road project in the Abia/Odual Local Government Area of Rivers State. It was gathered that the two soldiers were killed by the gunmen to pave the way for the abduction of the foreman, a foreigner, handling the project. The assailants it was further gathered went away with the rifles of the slain soldiers, whisked the foreman, three other workers at the project site, and a farmer they met while fleeing. The Defence Headquarters says Nigerian troops have, in the last week, killed 38 terrorists, apprehended 242 others and rescued 89 kidnapped hostages in different operations across the country. Mr Buba, a brigadier general, said the apprehended suspects comprised 175 gunmen/criminals, 20 kidnappers, 30 collaborators and 17 pipeline vandals. He said the troops had also within the week killed three terrorists, arrested 13 suspected criminals, and five kidnappers and rescued three kidnapped hostages. According to him, troops of Operation Whirl Stroke also killed seven terrorists, arrested three suspects and rescued three kidnapped hostages. In the North West, Buba said troops of Operation Hadarin Daji neutralised five terrorists, arrested eight suspects and rescued nine kidnapped hostages while several terrorists’ camps were destroyed.

The Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) says, its Non-OPEC oil supply is expected to expand by 1.5 million barrels per day (mb/d) in 2023. OPEC said this in its Monthly Oil Market Report for August obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday. NAN reports that Non-OPEC oil producers are crude oil-producing nations outside of the OPEC group and shale oil producers. According to the report, for 2024, non-OPEC oil production is projected to grow by 1.4 mb/d, unchanged from the previous assessment. According to the report, the OECD is anticipated to expand by about 0.3 mb/d, with OECD Americas contributing the largest increase.

A man, Soji Owowa, had been arraigned before Magistrate Patrick Nwaka of a Yaba Magistrates’ Court for allegedly selling his employer’s minibus valued at N3.2m for N550,000. Owowa was arraigned on Thursday on two counts of stealing. The prosecutor, Thomas Nurudeen, holding a brief for Haruna Magaji told the court that the defendant committed the crime on March 30, 2023, in the Lekki area of Lagos State. The 26-year-old was alleged to have collected N89,000 while his friend, who is still at large, took the rest of the money. According to Nurudeen, the offences contravened and are punishable under Sections 411, and 287 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State Nigeria 2015.

Increased video streaming and talk time raised the amount spent on telecom services to N3.86tn in 2022. Providing a breakdown of the revenue, the commission noted that GSM operators made N3.33tn; Fixed wired operators made N385.07m; Internet Service Providers made N92.08bn; Value Added Service providers made N40.74bn; collocation and infrastructure sharing operators made N3.29bn; and other telecom operators made N5.59bn. According to the NCC, the growth in active subscriptions impacted positively on other derived telecom indicators such as teledensity, Internet penetration as well as broadband penetration. “The total volume of data consumed by subscribers increased to 518,381.78TB as of December 2022 from 353,118.89TB as of December 2021. People made more calls in 2022 with total outgoing local and national traffic for calls hitting 204,091,441,469.16 minutes, a 17.59 per cent increase from the 173,555,413,817.69 minutes recorded in 2021.

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has said the group is disturbed by President Bola Tinubu’s appointment of only five persons from the South-east as ministers while some other regions had nine ministers. In a statement on Thursday by its President-General, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the group demanded the appointment of more ministers from the South-east region to correct the alleged marginalisation of the region in the ministerial appointments. The Ohanaeze Ndigbo believes in one united Nigeria and this can only be achieved in an atmosphere of fairness, justice and equity. “We therefore demand justice, fairness and equity for every ethnic group in Nigeria including the Igbo,” the statement read in part.
