£15m army drones grounded by rain

Drones bought for the British Army at a cost of more than £15m are unable to fly when it rains. The hand-launched Desert Hawk III drones were originally bought in 2007 for use in Iraq and Afghanistan. They have been used during military exercises in the UK and were sent with troops deployed to Estonia earlier this year. The drones are unable to fly if there is more than 1mm of rain an hour, it is claimed. A private firm has been hired to fly its drones during some army exercises because the Desert Hawk cannot be relied upon.
