more-inThe Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Thursday directed the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department to consider the cause of temple othuvars and fix their scale of pay on par with other government employees. Justice R. Mahadevan, hearing a plea of a temple othuvar seeking a revision of his salary by the HR&CE department, observed that it was appropriate to revive the historic significance of the services of othuvars in the temples of the State. The court observed that it was painful to see the current plight of othuvars, who were given pride of place several centuries ago. The court directed the department to consider the plea of the petitioner, Singaravelan, an othuvar of Tirunelveli district, who had sought a revision of his scale of pay. The court further directed the department to pass appropriate orders within six weeks.
