Firing staff only to rehire them on worse pay and employment terms should be outlawed, according to new polling suggesting the public backs a legal ban on the practice. Two-thirds of those polled (67%) suggested that they would be less likely to buy goods or services from a company that used fire and rehire. The GMB union is now calling for a ban on the practice to be included in the much-delayed employment bill, to be announced in the Queen’s Speech. Warren Kenny, GMB acting general secretary, said: “Fire and rehire is a dirty, bullying tactic used by unscrupulous bosses. It has no place in the modern world of work – and the public knows it.
