The 1945 match between Arsenal and Russian team Dynamo Moscow has been described as one of the greatest games ‘never seen’. ‘It would take much more than a football match to break down the real barriers which the Soviet government firmly believe in,’ said one government spokesperson. The tour got off to an awkward start when the Russian team were offered accommodation in the Wellington Barracks in St James’ Park. The Arsenal v Dynamo Moscow game was scheduled to take place at Tottenham’s White Hart Lane stadium. Some onlookers said that the Russian team had 15 players on the field at one point.
