The owners and operators of the A-League are seeking to change the visa-player regulations for next season to introduce a specific spot reserved for Asian and Middle Eastern players. However, the APL will apply to Football Australia to have the quota amended to four visa-players with the fifth and final spot reserved specifically for players from countries within the Asian Football Confederation – a concept commonly referred to as the “4+1 rule”. The planned regulations are aimed at encouraging clubs to sign players from countries that have significant diasporas in Australia and within catchment regions of A-League sides, potentially helping clubs attract new fans from migrant communities.
