As for Karli Morgenthau and the Flag Smashers, they’re unpersuaded by Sam’s contention that their dependence on violence, theft and mass disruption makes them no different from the power-grabbing nationalists they claim to hate. The Smashers believe that if their direct actions are making other people — and even themselves — uncomfortable, then they must be doing something right. The Smashers genuinely believe they’re making the world more equitable by hitting hard against the idea of borders. With only two more hours to go in this six-hour mini-series, the plot has stalled a bit. But while this episode could have used more action, the conversations are at least challenging.
