Female officers line up to be inspected by Mary Allen in London, May 1915. Allen had been a Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) organiser and suffragette. She was imprisoned three times, staged a hunger strike, and was force-fed while in prison for breaking the windows of government buildings in London in 1909.
