101 Freeway near Santa Barbara is set to reopen, but local beaches remain closed


The stretch of the 101 Freeway between Carpinteria and Santa Barbara that has been closed since Jan. 9 is expected to reopen by Monday, Caltrans announced on its Twitter feed. Meanwhile, many local and state beaches remain closed because of high bacterial counts related to the early January storm and dumping of sediment from the freeway. These beaches tested last week showed unsafe bacterial levels and are closed until further notice:Arroyo Burro Beach, or Hendry’s Beach, in Santa BarbaraCarpinteria State Beach, 12 miles south of Santa BarbaraEast Beach at Mission Creek and at Sycamore Creek, near downtown Santa BarbaraEl Capitan State Beach, 17 miles west of Santa BarbaraHope Ranch Beach, in a private Santa Barbara suburbGoleta Beach, in GoletaSummerland Beach, in SummerlandBeaches that remain open include Gaviota State Park, Refugio State Beach and Leadbetter Beach.
