Around 8 a.m. Saturday, 23 vehicles crashed in a chain reaction on the bridge, followed by a “series of secondary crashes” involving 20 more vehicles, the Maryland Transportation Authority said. Thirteen people were transported to the hospital, including two with serious but not life-threatening injuries, the transportation authority said. A major series of crashes involving 43 vehicles on the Bay Bridge in Maryland on Saturday morning sent more than a dozen people to the hospital and shut down the westbound lanes for hours, according to authorities. The staggering chain of crashes shut down the westbound lanes on the bridge for about six hours Saturday, as crews worked to clear debris and tow vehicles off the roadway and allow uninjured stranded motorists to safely detour away from the crash site. Traffic in both directions was routed through the eastbound lanes for several hours, causing major delays.
