"Oppenheimer," director Christopher Nolan's three-hour biographical drama about J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist who headed the American effort to develop the atomic bomb, was named the best movie of 2023 by the Southeastern Film Critics Association. In addition to Best Picture, "Oppenheimer" earned such awards as Best Director, Best Actor (Cillian Murphy), and Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr., who plays Oppenheimer's nemesis on the Atomic Energy Commission). Eighty-nine critics in nine Southern states voted in this year's Southeastern Film Critics Association (SEFCA) awards. Best Actor: Cillian Murphy, "Oppenheimer."
