250,000 litterbugs arrested so farSince the Anti-Littering Law was re-implemented six years ago, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has accosted and fined 252, 244 litterbugs and violators. The law empowers MMDA personnel, called “environmental enforcers” to go after individuals who throw trash on the streets as well as establishments. Aside from the cleanliness of surroundings, the MMDA also wants to maintain order on the streets by instilling discipline among motorists and even pedestrians. The MMDA also apprehends pedestrians who place themselves and other people at risk. These violators are called jaywalkers and as of July 31, 2016 the agency has already apprehended 142,175.
