Thirty-nine million Americans — about 15% of the adult population — cannot afford a summer vacation this year, a new survey released Thursday reveals. The number of Americans who can't afford a vacation is large but smaller than last year. A Bankrate.com survey last year found that 24% of U.S. adults weren’t planning summer vacations, because they couldn’t afford them. This year's survey finds that, among those who are planning a summer vacation, the average expected expense is $1,979. People who want to take a summer vacation but believe they can't afford one should consider signing up for a travel or cash-back credit card, Rossman says.
