Presidential candidates didn't always scream that the election was a fraud, prompting mobs to descend on vote counting centres and accuse their opponents of trying to steal the election. Most of the time they didn't threaten the very fabric of American democracy at all. They didn't use racial slurs about politicians they didn't like, question people's ethnic heritage or the national loyalties of elected officials.
