40ft holiday yachts fail to find a berth on Grasmere


Plans to moor ten 40ft yachts for tourists on William Wordsworth’s favourite lake have been shelved after overwhelming opposition from residents and the National Trust. Thousands of protesters, however, are still expected to descend on Grasmere on February 1 to demonstrate against using the Lake District National Park for commercial gain. Earlier this month The Times revealed that Lowther Estate, which owns the lake at Grasmere, had asked the park authority to decide if it needed planning permission for the boats. The motor yachts would have slept up to six each for a week at a time, and visitors would have been free to navigate the small lake and tie up where they chose each night.
