The year 2022 solidified climate change as a reality that South Africans are facing – with the KwaZulu-Natal floods in April being the foremost example of the devastating impact of the crisis. The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has warned that such floods, along with droughts and wildfires, will become more frequent and intense as global temperatures rise beyond the 1.5 degrees Celsius mark. Greenhouse gas emissions (such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide) from industrial activity powered by fossil fuels contribute to warming that causes climate change.
