Black and Manchildblack met in D.C., and moved New York in 1999 — first to Harlem and Washington Heights, then to Bed-Stuy. “I come from a family that just supports me in what I’m doing — I’m mixing up genders, I have a husband. During a recent mild summer afternoon stroll there, Black and his longtime partner (and now husband), Manchildblack, seemed to know everyone. Now in his late 30s, Black came up in the gay dance clubs of Washington, D.C. in the late ’90s. Unsurprisingly, Black and Manchildblack are longtime friends of its owners; they all used to perform at Friends and Lovers, a bar and club on Classon Avenue.
