The 1997 Mets snapped a streak of six straight losing seasons and remained in wild card contention until the final week of the season. The 2007 and 2008 teams had a wild card to fall back on (but didn’t) when they frittered away division leads in September. The 2016 team was under .500 as late as Aug. 20 but rode unexpected contributions from rookie starters Gsellman and Seth Lugo to the wild card game. The loss dropped them three games out of the second wild card spot with six to play and four teams to hurdle.
