Everyone talks about school choice. By school choice, both sides mean choice external to the neighborhood school — magnet schools, charters, single-sex academies, etc. I offer here a suggestion for a wide and deep trial in Virginia of parental choice internal to the neighborhood school. It is designed to help strengthen learning and improve the climate of the neighborhood school and provide parental choice within those schools. I suggest the Virginia DOE organize a test program of volunteer school divisions offering single-sex and co-ed classrooms together within existing co-ed public schools.
