The past week was one for subsidies run amuck. On Thursday, Airbus announced the termination of the A380 program after Dubai-based Emirates Airlines cancelled orders for 39 of the enormous jetliners. It’s not the same as a manufacturing plant, but this was also the week that GE decided to scale back its planned new Boston headquarters building. One of the major issues that the U.S is arguing with China about in the current trade negotiations is subsidies to Chinese state-owned companies. I think subsidies are the most pernicious issue affecting trade everywhere, and the past week offered some pointed examples.
