A Visual Chronicle of European Church Disasters


Europe has a long history of rebuilding houses of worship lost to fire, war or other causes. Many churches have been built on the remains of previous ones that were destroyed. Germany decided not to rebuild the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church after it was partially wrecked during World War II. It has stood untouched since 1945 in the center of Berlin in recognition of Europe’s violent 20th century.
