A bit knocked off of the bastard? what was Ed Hillary's famous quote after his ascent of Mt Everest? "We knocked the bastard off". That was the last thing Hillary intended and since then he and many other mountain climbers reliably went to pains to communicate that scaling a mountain doesn't "conquer" or diminish it. Fittingly or not, the knocked-off bit was famously known as the Hillary Step.
