The president’s weekend tweetstorm didn’t precipitate the politicization of the massacre, but it did inflame it. A return to the president’s practice of his early years — Sunday mornings at a Presbyterian Church — could only improve his presidency. The instant replay of reactions on all sides that we witnessed after the massacre in Sutherland Springs, Tex., and the Las Vegas massacre and every awful massacre since Columbine has left commentary without a purpose. My NBC colleague Chuck Todd suggested on my radio show that congressional hearings on school shootings would be a good idea. And if the hearings occur, we need one more promise: for everyone to actually hear all of the viewpoints presented.
