The Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) concluded its 11th congress October 5, having re-elected Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed as its chairman.As well as re-electing Abiy as chairman, the congress elected Demeke Mekonnen as EPRDF vice-chairman. The result will surprise no one, inside or outside Ethiopia. Abiy was re-elected almost unanimously, 99 percent of the vote caste. The 42-year-old former minister of science and technology took the helm of the ruling party at a moment of protracted political chaos for the coalition that has ruled Ethiopia with a firm hand since ousting Mengistu Hailemariam in 1991. Demeke Mekonnen secured 149 votes out of 177 for the deputy role.
