Kuffour never reached the final—his best return with the Black Stars was on his first showing at the tournament, as a semi-finalist in 1996—although Naybet did reach the final in 2004. On this occasion, the Atlas Lions were defeated by old rivals in the only all North African final in the competition’s history. Naybet’s Morocco qualified for two editions of the greatest show on earth—in 1994 and 1998—and while the Atlas Lions failed to progress, the centre-back impressed on the grandest stage. He’s also the North Africans’ most capped player ever, one of only three players to have qualified for the African Legends Cup of Nations to hold their country’s appearance record.
