Ireland is being hit by a “diesel dump” of second-hand cars from the UK and the situation will get worse after the move to ban fossil-fuel vehicles from British roads by 2040, an expert claims. The Irish government wants all new vehicles to be electric by 2030 but the spirit of the plan could be undermined by cheaper diesel models from the UK flooding the second-hand market. Ireland has already revised its 2020 electric vehicle targets twice because of a lack of public uptake. The 2008 target of 230,000 by 2020 was reduced to 50,000 in 2014 and is now just 20,000. So far this year 374 electric vehicles have been sold, compared with 175 last year.
